1861 was a year of firsts for Martin. In this case it was the first time that his wheat had been thrashed by mechanical means. Horse powered threshing had been done for over 60 years but this was probably done by steam. Farmer Peach was based in Rampisham.

Went to Yeovil to see the American Circus Tom Sayers the Champion was there

Tom Sayers was an English Bare knuckle fighter. His fame stemmed from his final fight with American John Camel Heenan. It was regarded as boxing’s first world championship. It resulted in a draw. He died in 1865 aged 39.
