The Cattistock commutation was not performed by Martin. It must have come as something of a surprise to him not to win the contract for this parish. It was bounded by the parishes of Rampisham, Evershot, Frome St Quintin, Sydling St Nicholas, Maiden Newton, Wraxall and Chilfrome all of which were commuted by him. Two valuers were appointed, both from Dorset, one was Charles Easton of Wimborne and the other Thomas Bridge of Wynford Eagle. The Rector was another one whose career was intimately linked with the Earl of Ilchester.
Robert Broadley [1] had been the Vicar at Stinsford [one of the seats of the Earls of Ilchester], domestic chaplain to the third Earl and then Rector at Melbury Sampford and Melbury Osmond. He probably retired near the time of the commutation because although he was still rector at Cattistock he had sold the lease to the tithes to two Londoners, Robert Thompson of Lincoln’s Inn and Keith Barnes of the City of Westminster. The reason for including Cattistock in Martins list of tithe maps is that the diaries show that he was involved actively in surveying for George Easton and Thomas Bridge.

Measuring Land at Cattistock for Mr Fryer Charge |
Charles Fryer had been Curate at Cattistock until 1832 when he became Rector at Chilfrome. He owned land and a house in Cattistock. |

Mr Easton called at my house respg Cattistock Maps & I agreed with him to make a Rough Map for 6d/acre & 1s/ for all that required measuring and making Sketch of Allington Map [Wilts] for Mr Wm Jennings to be charged to commutation 3.3.0 |
On the basis of these charges a commutation such as at Charminster would have cost £200 if accompanied by a full survey. The entry seems to imply that a finished map could be composed of parts that had been measured and other parts that hadn’t. Allington in Wilts was in the parish of Allcannings where The Earl of Ilchester had land. |
