Kain describes the map as being in three parts. There are indeed three sections to the map but physically it is only one [although it can be seen that the parchment has been extended and the map appears to be made from two skins. The first is the parish, mapped at 6 chains, whilst the second, at 3 chains is the village itself. The third part, also at three chains, is a tiny area of unenclosed land known as Common Ham. Interestingly the boundstones, as he labels them, in this section used to separate the various strips are drawn in, ■…………….■.

The inhabitants of Mert [as it is locally pronounced] appear to have a thing about Crewkerne [Crooken] There are three roads into Merriott from that direction all of which are protected by Toll Gates. On the roads out, to Chard, Hinton St George, Martock not a single one. The toll houses are shown and interestingly so are the gates across the roads . Equally unusual for a John Martin map the toll gates are named and it is likely that he did not make the map. Kain does not attribute the map to him. There is no doubt that he was one of three apportioners, all of whom signed the map, but it is also signed by one George Moss of Crewkerne who designates himself ‘Surveyor’ and it is likely that he made the map. The other apportioners were John James of Crewkerne [see above] and Burchall Peren of South Petherton and the actual apportionment is not written in Martin’s hand. Indeed the whole thing is a bit strange as Martin had no apparent connections with the parish and nor did the Earl of Ilchester. There are no diary entries for Merriott.
